Proofreading Services
Proofreading is my main source of freelance work. I proofread
anything—from author manuscripts getting ready for submission to
typeset books going to press. I've also been known to proofread
the occasional Ph.D. thesis, although, really, that wasn't very
much fun and had all kinds of big words in it. It did, though,
afford me an opportunity to catch up on my sleep.
No, I don't hand out free samples of my work, so don't ask.
Apparently you're confusing me with Baskin & Robbins.
| Let me
proofread your document before you send it out into the
big, wide world. Seriously, it shouldn't go out there
all alone.
I work from hard copy, using a red Pilot extra-fine
rolling ball pen to scribble my way to fame and fortune.
I can accept printouts sent directly to my attention or
preapproved e-mail attachments that I print out.
Once completed, I will return to you the following:
- Your printout, scribbled on with my trusty
red pen
- A cover letter, explaining any glitches or
ongoing inconsistencies you need to know about
- A sheet of proofreaders' marks, explaining any
shorthand marks I've made on your document
- A job sheet, detailing the hours I worked on
your document and the rest of our arrangements
- An invoice (Note: I charge
actual costs
for both paper/toner—if I print out your document
myself—and shipping/postage.)
Update on Freelance Services (February 2008)
Currently, I am not
taking on any new clients for proofreading or
typesetting. I am spending the bulk of 2008 working my
way to the other side of the publishing desk.
Benefits of My Services, or
Why You
Shouldn't Trust Your Own Eyes
- No
embarrassing typos
- No
formatting inconsistencies
- No
horrific night sweats about whether you used
the apostrophe properly in "it's"
